MEET THE BAND
& WORKSHOP
with
SLOW LORIS |
The Slow Loris is a shy creature,
known to come out only at night and then being extremely noisy. Members
of the SLOW LORIS BAND are certainly not shy and although often
active at night, they can be seen before midday in Leigh Library Gardens
and later in North Street School. Come along and talk to the band, hear
about their experiences, and join in with a few tunes and songs. And we
won't mention the noise. |

SONG-WRITING WORKSHOP
with
PIERTALK |
Chris Jones and
Jack Forbes (PIERTALK) have been writing songs in and about the
Southend community for over 20 years. Their inspiration has come from
memorable characters of the past - Ponto Boyton, Happy Harry, Tornado
Smith, Bill Robinson - and the destruction of old buildings in the name
of progress - the Talza Arcade, Kursaal Ballroom - as well as from
everyday life in a seaside town.
You never know
where you might find ideas for a good song and Jack and Chris may give
you some insight into how and what to look for and may even answer the
old question: what comes first, the words or the music? |

HARMONY & SONG WORKSHOP with
KITI THEOBALD |
KITI THEOBALD
is probably the best a
cappella female traditional singer in Essex and deserves national
recognition. She believes strongly in the power of the traditional
ballad and the pleasure to be obtained from singing the old songs solo
and in harmony. So bring your voice to Kiti's workshop and prepare to be
surprised at what you can do when you're in the hands of a good tutor. |

EASY BAND WORKSHOP
REDUCED TEMPO SESSION
with
MALCOLM REID
|
This
combined workshop and session is for all musicians who would like to
play together and enjoy the atmosphere of a normal session but find the
pace of the music is usually too fast. Or maybe they just want to relax
and take things a bit more slowly. MALCOLM REID from the Yardarm
Session will be in charge and welcoming musicians with some experience
as well as beginners. |

BEGINNERS' FRAILING BANJO WORKSHOP
MEET THE
ARTISTES
with
MAT MARTIN &
KIRSTY McGEE
|
You wouldn't
think that playing the banjo could be controversial but the technique
known as frailing has caused players to become quite
argumentative about what it is and how to do it. Is it double-thumbing,
clawhammer, beating or rapping? As Donald Zepp says, it's largely a
matter of opinion.
Bring a banjo
(or just your good selves) and find out what it's all about with the
expert help of MAT MARTIN & KIRSTY McGEE. |

FIDDLE & GUITAR
WORKSHOP
MEET THE ARTISTES
with
NANCY KERR
& JAMES FAGAN
|
Is there any need
to say that a Workshop and Meet the Artiste session with NANCY KERR &
JAMES FAGAN is going to be exceedingly popular? Get there early
because room is limited.
Nancy is a fine
fiddle and viola player and James is famous for his playing on a
guitar-shaped version of the flat-backed bouzouki. Expect a master-class
as well as a workshop. |

THE YARDARM SESSION
with
TERRY DOCHERTY |
The Yardarm
Session, which usually meets on the 2nd Monday of the month, was started
by TERRY DOCHERTY nearly 18 months ago to give musicians who play
English folk music an opportunity to get together in South Essex,
instead of always having to travel across to the other end of the
county. It continues to grow in popularity and while still having
English music at its core, it has broadened its appeal to include music
from other traditions as well as attracting singers, poets, and
storytellers. It has also brought about a revival of interest in playing
the accordion and melodeon and the setting up of the Thamesgate
Traditional Arts Association.
Come along to this
special folk festival session and sample the delights of swinging from
the Yardarm with TERRY DOCHERTY. |
